WOMEN ENCOURAGED TO CARE FOR THEIR MENTAL HEALTH
NATIONAL WOMEN'S HEALTH WEEK MAY 14 - 20, 2006

In observance of National Women’s Health Week, May 14 – 20, 2006, the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) reminds women to maintain healthy, happy, and productive lifestyles by caring for their mental health. Mental health is as important as physical health. Apply the following tips to manage life’s challenges:

• Treat your body right by staying physically active and maintaining a healthy diet.

• Don’t expect to accomplish more than one task at a time – create a “to do” list tackling those of highest priority first.

• Set realistic goals by doing what is possible.

• Cultivate a positive work environment to help alleviate stress.

• Take time for yourself by relaxing for at least 15 minutes a day.

• Talk about any negative feelings with a loved one or a friend.

• Volunteer or get involved in an activity that is meaningful to you.

• Participate in activities you enjoy and look forward to.

If you have adopted these tips and still feel overwhelmed, it may be necessary to seek professional help. A mental health professional, such as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is trained to assess, diagnose and treat individuals with common mental health conditions, such as stress, anxiety, depression or an addiction. Therapy can help mitigate common sources of stress, including care giving for a loved one or an aging parent, financial worries, family problems, and heavy workloads.
