TIPS FOR MANAGING STRESS THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
Tis the season for crowded shopping malls, high expectations
and escalating stress levels. The holiday “to do” list of
traveling, entertaining and purchasing expensive gifts can contribute
to feelings of being overwhelmed and increased tension
Give the gift of mental health by recognizing signs of stress such
as irritability, sleep disturbances, loss
of appetite, substance abuse or mood swings. The
California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) offers these guidelines on how
to manage the hustle and bustle of the holidays
and boost holiday cheer.
•
Expect the unexpected: There may be some delays in travel plans or
other unexpected circumstances that are beyond your control.
Accept the situation and assume you will likely encounter these obstacles.
• Stay within budget: Financial worries increase stress levels. Only
spend what you can afford. Instead of buying gifts for
every family member, consider drawing names or do a white elephant
theme.
• Keep it simple: Do not create unrealistic expectations. Try to limit
the number of parties, ask for help and do not overschedule
yourself.
• Take a break: Do something different to celebrate the holidays. Give
your time to someone else by volunteering at a shelter or a hospital.
• Eat and drink sensibly: Pay attention to how much fat, sugar and
alcohol you consume as you struggle with stress. Eat before
attending parties and limit alcohol consumption.
•
Maintain therapy during the holidays: Continue with any therapy sessions,
recovery meetings or support systems. This will help you
stay focused on your overall therapeutic goals.
If you are unable to eliminate the “holiday blues,” it
may be something more serious. Considerseeking
a
Marriage and Family Therapist if you feel you may have a problem.
